First Lines Fridays is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines?
- Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page
- Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first
- Finally… reveal the book!

He was an easy mark.

The City of Brass by S.A. Chakraborty!

Nahri has never believed in magic. Certainly, she has power; on the streets of 18th century Cairo, she’s a con woman of unsurpassed talent. But she knows better than anyone that the trade she uses to get by—palm readings, zars, healings—are all tricks, sleights of hand, learned skills; a means to the delightful end of swindling Ottoman nobles.
But when Nahri accidentally summons an equally sly, darkly mysterious djinn warrior to her side during one of her cons, she’s forced to accept that the magical world she thought only existed in childhood stories is real. For the warrior tells her a new tale: across hot, windswept sands teeming with creatures of fire, and rivers where the mythical marid sleep; past ruins of once-magnificent human metropolises, and mountains where the circling hawks are not what they seem, lies Daevabad, the legendary city of brass, a city to which Nahri is irrevocably bound.
In that city, behind gilded brass walls laced with enchantments, behind the six gates of the six djinn tribes, old resentments are simmering. And when Nahri decides to enter this world, she learns that true power is fierce and brutal. That magic cannot shield her from the dangerous web of court politics. That even the cleverest of schemes can have deadly consequences.
After all, there is a reason they say be careful what you wish for…

I’m reading this right now and even though I’m not even 100 pages in yet – the text is small and the pages are big – I’m loving this so much! Already so much stuff has gone down and I’m pretty sure I’m only on the second or third chapter! Crazyyyyyyyy. How many of you have already read this one? Let me know!
I love this! I still need to read the book, but the first line is awesome.

It was one of the perfect first lines ever ❤ I didn't even need to get into the second paragraph to make it pull me in.

Oh honey. There is “the boy”… the reason I’m moving in the first place. There is the lunatic that nearly left me homeless. There is freak who told me he needed money because or chemo and then took it for drugs and nearly od’d and then there is about every abusive alcoholic male in my family. Although I should be clear that “the boy” is an amazing person. It would be easier if he wasn’t. It is always easier to be angrier than hurt.
