First Lines Fridays is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines?
- Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page
- Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first
- Finally… reveal the book!

Candlelight reflected off the silver anchor
etched onto my sister's necklace.
It was an ugly piece of jewelry
and something Eulalie would never have picked out
for herself.
She loved simple strands of gold,
extravagant collars of diamons.
Not... that.

House of Salt and Sorrows by Erin A. Craig!

In a manor by the sea, twelve sisters are cursed.
Annaleigh lives a sheltered life at Highmoor, a manor by the sea, with her sisters, their father, and stepmother. Once they were twelve, but loneliness fills the grand halls now that four of the girls’ lives have been cut short. Each death was more tragic than the last—the plague, a plummeting fall, a drowning, a slippery plunge—and there are whispers throughout the surrounding villages that the family is cursed by the gods.
Disturbed by a series of ghostly visions, Annaleigh becomes increasingly suspicious that the deaths were no accidents. Her sisters have been sneaking out every night to attend glittering balls, dancing until dawn in silk gowns and shimmering slippers, and Annaleigh isn’t sure whether to try to stop them or to join their forbidden trysts. Because who—or what—are they really dancing with?
When Annaleigh’s involvement with a mysterious stranger who has secrets of his own intensifies, it’s a race to unravel the darkness that has fallen over her family—before it claims her next.

SERIOUSLY THIS BOOK IS GIVING ME LOW KEY NIGHTMARES AND I WAS NOT EXPECTING IT TO WHEN I FIRST STARTED! What do you guys think of this one? I almost put the Barbie 12 Dancing Princesses gifs but I figured that would be a little too obvious.

I feel like I should’ve recognized that opening, since I’ve picked up the book and glanced at it recently, and yet somehow I didn’t? xD My bad. I haven’t read this yet, but I’m really looking forward to!

Hhaah no I never really remember the beginning of the book, so it’s funny when I do this and I’m like “wait a minute I don’t even remember that?!” So no I wouldn’t even have expected you to remember the first few lines! I can’t wait for you to read it though. I’m so curious to see what you think of it.

I do that a lot, too. Why is this familiar? And then you see the cover and it’s like … oooh, my bad. I’ve always had a pretty bad memory for words, though, so that’s not surprising.

I really want to read this book, but haven’t picked it up yet so I didn’t recognize the opener. Sounds great for a seasonal read, though!

Yes! If I didn’t have to read it for this month, I would have totally read it in October ❤
