First Lines Friday: August 30, 2019

First Lines Fridays is a weekly feature for book lovers hosted by Wandering Words. What if instead of judging a book by its cover, its author or its prestige, we judged it by its opening lines?

  • Pick a book off your shelf (it could be your current read or on your TBR) and open to the first page
  • Copy the first few lines, but don’t give anything else about the book away just yet – you need to hook the reader first
  • Finally… reveal the book!
The queen stopped screaming just after midnight.
Simon had been hiding in her closet, fingers jammed
into his ears to block out the noise.
For hours, he had crouched there, knees
drawn to chest, head bowed.
For hours, the queen's rooms had shuddered
in tandem with her screams.
Now, there was silence.

Furyborn by Claire Legrand!

The stunningly original, must-read fantasy of 2018 follows two fiercely independent young women, centuries apart, who hold the power to save their world…or doom it.

When assassins ambush her best friend, Rielle Dardenne risks everything to save him, exposing herself as one of a pair of prophesied queens: a queen of light, and a queen of blood. To prove she is the Sun Queen, Rielle must endure seven elemental magic trials. If she fails, she will be executed…unless the trials kill her first.

One thousand years later, the legend of Queen Rielle is a fairy tale to Eliana Ferracora. A bounty hunter for the Undying Empire, Eliana believes herself untouchable–until her mother vanishes. To find her, Eliana joins a rebel captain and discovers that the evil at the empire’s heart is more terrible than she ever imagined.

As Rielle and Eliana fight in a cosmic war that spans millennia, their stories intersect, and the shocking connections between them ultimately determine the fate of their world–and of each other.

So I actually read this book last year, but this was when I stopped my blog because I was super depressed and whatnot, so I didn’t ever write a review. I know I want to read it again because I want to read the second one! Plus there’s going to be a third one so I’m curious to see how it’s going to go. What are your thoughts on this book?

    1. Thanks so much, Susan! I’m really glad to be back blogging and I am so excited to continue to grow and learn from this experience and hopefully continue with it forever and ever. I mean, until I finish all the books I want to read in the world 😉

I hope you end up liking it! I think I may do a reread eventually. Later on in the year or something.

    1. Yes!!! I loved Reign so much and I need to do a rewatch. I’m so bummed that they ended it, but I think it was a great show 🙂

Yes, me too! I know that it switches every chapter, but I feel like the chapters work well enough that it doesn’t bother me that they switch POVs every time.
