Shelf Control 006 – August 7, 2019

Ayyye, look at that! I didn’t forget this time! Thanks again so much to Lisa @ Bookish Fantasies for hosting this fun weekly meme. Although, I think I need to do better at actually reading what I have on my shelf before buying some more stuff, am I right?

Oh well!

Want to participate in Shelf Control? Here’s how:

  • Write a blog post about a book that you own that you haven’t read yet.
  • Add your link in the comments!
  • If you’d be so kind, I’d appreciate a link back from your own post.
  • Check out other posts, and…

Have fun!

Title: The Priory of the Orange Tree
Author: Samantha Shannon
Published: February 26, 2019
Length: 827 pages

A world divided.
A queendom without an heir.
An ancient enemy awakens.

The House of Berethnet has ruled Inys for a thousand years. Still unwed, Queen Sabran the Ninth must conceive a daughter to protect her realm from destruction—but assassins are getting closer to her door.

Ead Duryan is an outsider at court. Though she has risen to the position of lady-in-waiting, she is loyal to a hidden society of mages. Ead keeps a watchful eye on Sabran, secretly protecting her with forbidden magic.

Across the dark sea, Tané has trained all her life to be a dragonrider, but is forced to make a choice that could see her life unravel.

Meanwhile, the divided East and West refuse to parley, and forces of chaos are rising from their sleep.

how did i get it?

Audible. Have you seen how many pages this beast is? No way am I casually reading this. I need to listen to it.

when did i get it?

June 12, 2019. Apparently this was a late birthday present.

why do i want to read it?

Someone on Twitter said it perfectly. I’m a dragon hoe.

I swear there are so many books that I need to get to. What are your thoughts guys? Should I make this one a priority? Should I keep holding off until later? Give me some direction, loves!

  1. Listen, girl, if you learn how to read all the things before buying more, you need to come teach me. xD My TBR bookcase is getting ridiculous, and I’m not sure I can physically hold more books on it at this point.

A dragon ho is the best sort of ho to be. I bought the Kindle version of this when it went on sale, but phew, with all those pages, I don’t know when I’ll have a chance to start it. It sounds sooo good, though, doesn’t it? And all the reviews I’ve read have made me want to read it even more.

    1. That’s a big IF but if that ever happens, of course I will show you my ways ❤ I actually have some books next to my bookcase because I physically do not have any more room, and then there's books in the kitchen and the foyer and the bedroom… Just books all over the place! I mean, I guess my house can be considered a big box so at least they are all fitting in the box 🙂

Yaaaaas! I'm glad you agree 🙂 I can't imagine being any other kind of ho. Also seeing that I spelled ho wrong, so I feel really dumb lol. Yeah see, I can't do it just based on the pages! I feel like it's freaking me out for no reason – well the reason being the size lol. I hope we get to read it! Potential buddy read maybe? *wink wink*

      1. See, I got smart, and I started buying Kindle editions because, one, hubby can’t complain about my growing TBR bookcase and running out of room. And two, if they’re floating out in the ether, I can totally be in denial of exactly how large my TBR is.

Oooh, there you go! We were looking for one, and that’d be perfect, wouldn’t it?! See, I told you it wouldn’t be hard to find. xD

        1. LOLOL so smart! I’ll get back to doing Kindle eventually. I’ve been doing Scribd for all my audiobook needs (if my libraries don’t have it) and then if I can’t find it there, then I’ll do Audible. But if there isn’t an audiobook at all, then I decide on whether I want to just borrow it or buy it. I may have to go back into Kindle buying again lol.

Haha you’re so right! So this book for after September for sure ❤ I think this will be an epic discussion.

  2. This is on my shelf too! I grabbed it a few months ago when it was a Kindle daily deal… but it’s so long! I need to really clear my other commitment books and then settle down with this one. Great choice! And as for reading the books on our shelves before buying more… well, I think every booklover can relate!

    1. Yes, I feel like unless this is a priority book, then put it off until you have time to dedicate to it. I know I can’t read this in a day – or even two days – so I’ll need to set aside some time to read this. LOL yes one day we will learn to finish our books before buying more 😀

  3. If you find a way to not buy new books before finishing the ones you currently have on your shelf then you need to PLEASE teach me how to do it! Haha I don’t know if I’d ever be able to do it. It’s so hard when you see a new book and it calls out your name!

I’ve got this fat as tome on my shelf too and it’s intimidating as hell! I mean, it’s SO BIG 👀 I’ve toyed with picking it up every time I look up and see it looming over me (literally) but I haven’t gathered the courage to haha I’ve also heard quite a few mixed reviews. I’m getting the impression you either really love it or you don’t at all! I think I could handle this if it was a buddy read broken up into sections. Maybe. I dunno

    1. I’ll totally make a post if I figure it out! lol although that may not happen for a century or more if I’m being quite honest lol. I’m doing my best, but I’m the worst at buying books because I want to have it. I’ll read it eventually, but as long as I have it in my possession, I don’t have to worry about FOMO.

Ahhh see when you call it a tome, I immediately get intimidated and think it’s full of magic and wisdom and spells lol. Something big but dangerous. We could do a buddy read if you wanted ❤

      1. Oh girl, FOMO is SOOO real. Haha I have it all the time. Especially when I see people at the start of every month getting their BOTM boxes on bookstagram. My FOMO explodes 😂

Omg, doing a buddy read of Priory would be awesome, I think! I don’t do buddy reads that often but I do enjoy it and it keeps me accountable (most of the time… haha). If you’re keen maybe we can see if other people would like to join in too 🙂 But… Maybe not this month 😂
