Shout out to Tay & Missy @ Frayed Books for being so patient with me during this buddy read! I am not sure if we ended up finishing it at the same time, but I could not put it down last night and ended up finishing it before I went to bed. You know, before I had to work and all that. No big.

Also special shout out to my boy Max for keeping me company while I was reading it in the daytime, and the rest of my girls at night because this book got hella creepy and I kind of scared myself.

So honestly the main character of this story, and the POV that we hear the most from is Roan back in 1851. Her dad recently passed away and basically left a note saying that she was to live with a Dr. Maudley at Mill House upon his death. It was a creepy note, and she doesn’t understand why she was being sent away. She also has a few powers that seem to be connected to everything, and it has caused some people in her past to deem her a witch.

Zoey is in the present, and her father was deemed insane after he went to the Mill House and ended up losing all of his memories, especially of her. So she decides to go to Mill House herself to find out what happened, and maybe cure her father. She also has some powers, but whenever she uses them, she gets… punished physically. It’s not good.

The book jumps between the two timelines: Roan’s and Zoey’s. We also see some letters from Hermione Smith, whose husband was the one that built Mill House when there was nothing on the mountain. All three women have to deal with supernatural things that happen to them, and I feel like each one of them ends up losing a part of themselves by the time this is all over.

These girls just go through some shit, okay? Like… I finished it and I still don’t know if I fully understand what happened.

Not to mention that its supposed to deal with Faustus and is sort of a retelling, but I don’t know much about him except he made a deal with the Devil and ended up selling his soul.

I like that it was creepy, and it didn’t give me nightmares. That was honestly what could make or break a book for me, and whether or not I’ll continue to read it because I am the biggest scardey cat in the world. I was actually so into the story that I ended up staying up super past my bedtime to finish it because I was so close!

I also really liked Roan, especially since we got to hear more from her. I felt like she was a “down with the patriarchy” type of woman, and I totally appreciated her for that especially during this time period. There were some times where her train of thought was confusing to me, but in the end, I saw what I needed to.

The ending kind of bothered me. I felt like it didn’t tie up all the loose ends, and I don’t feel like this is going to be part of a series or anything. There are times where it makes sense to have an open ended… ending, but I don’t know. I feel like the very final reveal was kind of a cop out, and I didn’t understand it. I didn’t understand why someone would go to Mill House if they never had “ties” to it.

I also kind of wish we heard more from Hermione, because hers was truly the beginning of the house, and we really only got to see her spiral into insanity without really knowing what else she had to go through before all of that happened.

I feel like this one was a short review because I was so focused on trying to get through it and immerse myself into the story that I didn’t take any notes at all. This is all just my feelings. I liked it, but I didn’t love it. Nothing bad about the writing or anything at all. The prose was creepy and totally matched the story. I just… felt like I’m still missing something.
