It’s the summer before her sixteenth birthday, and Sabrina Spellman knows her world is about to change. She’s always studied magic and spells with her aunts, Hilda and Zelda. But she’s also lived a normal mortal life — attending Baxter High, hanging out with her friends Susie and Roz, and going to the movies with her boyfriend, Harvey Kinkle.

Now time is running out on her every day, normal world, and leaving behind Roz and Susie and Harvey is a lot harder than she thought it would be. Especially because Sabrina isn’t sure how Harvey feels about her. Her cousin Ambrose suggests performing a spell to discover Harvey’s true feelings. But when a mysterious wood spirit interferes, the spell backfires… in a big way.

Sabrina has always been attracted to the power of being a witch. But now she can’t help wondering if that power is leading her down the wrong path. Will she choose to forsake the path of light and follow the path of night?

1.      Which “Sabrina” do you identify with the most? Melissa Joan Hart or Kiernan Shipka?

–I don’t know that I identify with either over the other, but I admire them both! Melissa Joan Hart was older than Little Me when I watched, and Kiernan Shipka is younger, and both of them are far more cool and magical than me. But both of them struggle with finding their place in the world, and worry about not being accepted for who they are, and that’s relatable to everyone.

2.      What is the most attractive thing about being a witch?

–Being immortally hot, and getting to know other immortal hotties? No, I think that the idea of being able to influence the world is alluring, and the idea of being able to live a little outside the world, a little differently than the way the world wants you to. Witches tend to be independent, powerful, and sometimes strange women… and I find the idea of that very attractive!

3.      What would your strongest power be?

–I love story-telling. I’d love to use magic to create visions of the stories I tell in the minds of my readers and listeners, to amaze the populace! Without having magic, that’s what I’m always trying to do.

4.      If you could be any character in the Sabrina world, who would it be and why?

–I’d be Hilda Spellman! I like cooking and bookshops, and I’d like to be a good kind witch… and yet, to make anyone who hurt my loved ones pay. You don’t cross Hilda!

5.      If you weren’t an author, what would your dream job be?

–Being an author has always been my dream job! Aside from when I was five, when I wanted to be a ballerina. I’m not a good dancer—I would knock down the other tiny ballerinas in class as if I was a bowling ball and they were the pins. If I had magic, that wouldn’t have happened. Is my dream job being a witch?

6.      What was your favorite part about writing this novel?

–The family feels! I adore that the Spellmans, though very strange, are basically the most functional family in town. They’re weird to both the witches and the mortals—no father figure, living in a funeral home, disobeying all the rules—but when trouble threatens, they rush to love and support each other. It was fun to delve into that aspect a little deeper… to write how Sabrina’s relationship with her cousin Ambrose especially would evolve as she grows up, since while Sabrina’s gone from a baby to 16, Ambrose has always been the same age, and Sabrina’s starting to question everything about her world. And it was fun to think about how Sabrina’s family looks to outsiders, like Harvey and his brother Tommy with their terrible home life, or lonely witches Prudence and Nick.

7.      Are you Team Harvey or Team Nicholas?

–Can’t I be both? 😉 I really love both Harvey and Nick, who both try so hard and care so much even when they’re making mistakes, and I enjoy the way their characters have interesting deviations from type: Nick the bad boy is likely to solve problems by trying the library, whereas Harvey the dreamy artist will reach for his gun. I think they shine in scenes together because of their differences—expect more scenes with them interacting in book 2! I’m fine with whatever makes everybody happiest, whether that’s Sabrina finding her way back to Harvey, or settling down in witchy bliss with Nick, or any other option. I just want them all to be OK! Of course, people don’t tend to be happy for long in dark supernatural tales…

8.      Which witch would you want to be your best friend and why?

–Prudence! She is terrifying, but I love me a disdainful lady who pretends not to care but secretly cares a lot. Once Prudence loves you, she’s ride or die—we see that with the Weird Sisters—so I feel if I were her BFF, she would teach me to do my eye make-up beautifully and maybe slay my enemies.
