Let’s Talk Bookish | Lying about Reading Books…

Let’s Talk Bookish is a weekly meme, that is hosted by Rukky @ Eternity Books and Dani @ Literary Lion, where we discuss certain topics, share our opinions, and spread the love by visiting each other’s posts.

This week’s prompt came from the lovely Jillian @ Jillian The Bookish Butterfly, so thank you for that!

Just kidding.

So I think there are two reasons for lying about reading certain books. That’s what I can think of anyway.

(1) Because you were supposed to read it for school…

I may be talking about myself for this one, oops!

I don’t put that I read it on my Goodreads, nor do I actively tell people that I read certain books for school, but there were definitely some books that I was supposed to read for class that I definitely didn’t. I may or may not have … sparknotes that shit when I needed to. I know, I know… terrible! It’s terrible!

But at least I read SOMEthing about it, and was able to participate in some discussion? Yeah, I’m digging myself into a bigger hole here, aren’t I?

(2) Because you don’t want to hear people be all shocked or whatever that you didn’t read THAT book because it was SO POPULAR or SO AMAZING or something

Now this one, I don’t do. There’s already so many people that probably read THAT book, so I really don’t need to do it. It’s almost the same where people are like OMG…. you never watched the Star War movies?!?!? And it’s like blasphemous or something.

Dude. Not everyone is going to read or watch everything, and we aren’t required to! Let people like what they like, and don’t force people to go along with the hype if they don’t wanna.

I personally don’t know any other reason, but hey I’m sure there are a lot out there.

Do you do either of these things? Or something else? Or not at all? Is it worth it to lie about reading certain books? Would you end up reading them anyway?

  1. I haven’t lied about having read a book yet, but I get so annoyed/sad when people act all shocked when I haven’t read something. Everyone has got a limited amount of time they can invest in reading, so it shouldn’t be that surprising that someone hasn’t read a book that you have!

  2. I also don’t count schoolbooks as books I read when it comes to the blog or goodreads because it was read for school and I prefer to forget them when they weren’t any good. And true for the second reason, nobody should have to feel bad for having not read a popular book. It’s different when it’s like “whatt??? HOW COULD YOU HAVE MISSED OUT ON ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS I’VE EVER LOVED, YOU HAVE TO READ IT”, so it’s kind of just like a friend recommendation kind of thing (I hope that made sense lol), but if it’s shaming or overdoing it, then yeah, no thanks.
