Top Ten Tuesday: Extraordinary Book Titles

Top Ten Tuesday: Extraordinary Book Titles

Oh this one looks like a fun topic! I should have worked on this last night but oh well. I was busy trying to make my graphics for the Never Tilting World Blog Tour, and I’m pretty happy with it. Now, I get to work on this in the morning at work! And for once I made it work semi-on time lol.

Thanks as always to Jana for hosting this, and thank you to Elise for picking this week’s topic!

Okay, until I started reading this, I had no idea what this title meant. Now I know that the main character’s last name is STRANGE, and people call him “Strange the Dreamer”. Basically it’s his name and a “title” so I get it now. I think I was thinking it was the beginning of a sentence? Like “Stranger the dreamer who stays on the ground rather than fly in the air” or whatever fantasy type thing.

Immediately I’m all for girl gangs, so when this one has Undead in the beginning? Sold, sis. Sold.

Not reading the synopsis, I wouldn’t have realized that our main character’s name was Crier. For some reason, I was thinking it was a group of people that were so immersed in grief and despair that they were called Criers. Or something. I don’t know, but I was intrigued when I saw the title and the cover.

Anything with “Athena” in the title, that doesn’t look like it’s about Greek Mythology is intriguing to me. And then seeing this bad ass girl on the cover looking like she’s seen some shit, wow. I like this title.

How can “teeth” be in a “mist” you know? That part was already intriguing to me and it made me want to know what the heck was going on. Plus the girl upside down in the middle of these creepy ass mountains. I know that’s not the title, but the title was already calling me.

I like this title, because what’s the one thing you associate witches with? Being burned at the stake. Not something you want to associate them with because that’s terrible, but it happened. So knowing that these witches DON’T burn, basically CAN’T be burned, and I’m trying to see how.

The Dark. You’re giving The Dark your love. Is The Dark a person or is it just a manifestation of something else? I’m already like what? That’s what called me to this novel in the first place too.

This just sounds really whimsical for some reason, even though the premise of this story was anything but. These kids didn’t always go to a fantasy land, or at least not a nice one. Does the heart take you to what you are, or what you need? What does it mean that every heart is a doorway? A doorway to where?

I know that with this title, I was not expecting whatever it was that this book was really about, you know? Plus that cover is sooooooooo amazing. I know, I keep talking about covers. But I like the title.

I don’t love math anymore, so seeing something math related (especially division omg) but romantic? That was interesting enough for me to want to check it out.

Now I don’t know if a lot of these are “extraordinary” titles because that could mean anything, but they were extraordinary enough for me to pick them up and read it. So that’s gotta count for something.

  1. Oh my gosh, I didn’t know that about Strange the Dreamer, either! I just thought the title was all … poetic or something? That’s interesting. These Witches Don’t Burn definitely grabbed my attention as a title, too! It’s such a forceful declaration, almost, but also contradictory to the cliche thing most people think of when they think of witches.

    1. Right??? Before I read it I just could not figure out the title, you know? It kept bothering me. That book is so good though. I’m about halfway through it now, or a little less if I’m reading it right, but wow. It’s so interesting. That’s why I loved that title too (these witches don’t burn)

  2. Nice list! I was intrigued by Every Heart a Doorway also, and I think I might have been drawn to it by the title before I knew anything else about it. (That whole series has fun titles, come to think of it. Every Heart a Doorway, Down Among the Sticks and Bones, Beneath the Sugar Sky, In an Absent Dream, and Come Tumbling Down are all pretty cool titles.)
