Top Ten Tuesday: Cover Redesigns I Loved/Hated

Seriously, can we give a huge shout out to Jana @ That Artsy Reader Girl for keeping up with this weekly meme for years?! I mean, talk about dedication and consistency! Thank you so much Jana for staying with us for so long (and for allowing newbies like me to join in)! I hope we make you proud.

For the sake of simplicity – and because I saw someone else do this and thought it was hella smart – the left is the original cover, and the right is the redesigned cover.

Some of these are probably just the difference between the paperback and the hardcover, but honestly it makes a difference to me on which one I’ll buy. Then you’ll have series like Flame in the Mist (I honestly love both covers) but then you can’t find the second book with a similar cover to the first one and so you need to buy Flame in the Mist AGAIN just so they match. It’s exhausting.

  1. I agree with you on Flame in the Mist! The old cover was so stunning, but I also get why that decision was made, as those new covers match with The Wrath & the Dawn paperbacks! 😄
    Talking about The Wrath & the Dawn, I actuall prefer the old cover better? There’s something about that’s so aesthetically pleasing to me! I also prefer the old cover of Slayers, it feels prettier to me, for some reason! ❤
    That first cover of Stags is amazing, it’s such a shame they changed it 😔

    1. And I still haven’t read a lot of these books either so I may not know the background on why it was changed and all that lol. I was going based on aesthetics for me (except for the rare ones that I did read lol). See and I love this because we can agree, disagree, but still love each other ❤

      I'm so irritated with the change for STAGS honestly. But it matches the second book that's coming out so I guess that's why?

  2. Great list Leelynn! Harry Potter made it onto my list too but I actually loved the original cover the most haha it just takes me back to my childhood and gives me all the feels. I have a set of one of the newer editions too and while it’s cute I still prefer the original 😜I actually also really liked the original cover of Wrath and the Dawn although that redesign is still really pretty! Yikes to that redesign of Broken Things… Definitely prefer the original! The same goes for S.T.A.G.S!

    That redesign of Slayers is amazing. Also, welcome to the TTT community! I know I’ve seen you around these past couple of weeks, but I can’t remember if I ever gave you an official welcome message or realized that you were new. We’re a friendly group, and I’m glad you decided to join up. 🙂

      1. You’re welcome! And, yes, your comments are going through. I’ve been having issues with an avalanche spam comments, so I have to manually approve all of the real ones. But it is up now. 🙂

  6. Oh, I really like the cover redesign for The Wrath & The Dawn! So pretty. I actually prefer the original Slayers cover, which seems weird because I’m usually all for dragons. But the bad CGI dragon is too much for me. xD

    Ugh, I so feel you with Flame in the Mist! I have that on my list. I bought the first cover, because I just LOVED it. But now I can’t get book two to match. You know, unless I buy it in Spanish (which DID do a second cover to match the first). Which is just a pain, because I don’t like the new cover. =/

    1. I know there’s another cover design as well that I think I like even better but I didn’t include that one. I think more people included that one in theirs honestly lol.

      Hahah yeah the bad CGI dragon has its negatives but I kind of find it endearing lol!

      Oh wow I didn’t know the Spanish one had it! That’s freaking awesome. I just wouldn’t be able to read it as fast.

      1. I would have to read it painfully slow if I got the Spanish version, and it’d also cost an arm and a leg to have it shipped her. But it’s aaaalmost worth it, because it has a FIRE DRAGON on it instead of a phoenix. xD And I’m sad that there’s no English cover with that.

  7. I really like the second cover to The Siren. That second Wrath & The Dawn cover is probably my favorite (I’ve seen three designs for them). I like the Flame in the Mist redesign, but I didn’t own the original, so I wasn’t trying to get a matching cover. They had a really amazing pre-order campaign where they gave out paperbacks with the new cover when you ordered Smoke in the Sun, but I can still see how people would be disappointed if they had bought the first one and wanted a matching set.

    1. I think it was even a revamp of the novel itself from what I remember reading, so not only was the content better, but the cover was prettier 🙂 Oh I always seem to miss really cool pre-order campaigns. I think I like doing them so I can get the swag and I know I’ll get the book rather soon.

  8. I agree about The Winner’s Curse, so much. The second cover, apart from the awkward-looking pose of the girl, doesn’t represent the content at all (I don’t think Kestrel was good at fighting?)

    It also kind of looks like they wanted to change the cover just to make it a little more similar to Throne of Glass.
    Great list!

  15. I agree that the cover redesigns for HP, The Siren, are better than their counterparts. Both covers for The Wrath & The Dawn, and The Slayers are pretty though, in my opinion.
    AND OOF, the cover redesign for The Winner’s Curse is baaaaad, lol. The original is SO MUCH BETTER. The original covers for Flame in the Mist, Broken Things, and STAGS are so much better than their newer counter parts.

  16. I agree about the Flame in the Mist cover! I loved the original cover, and though the new cover isn’t bad, I wish they would at least have the sequel also match the original cover. Love the new Wrath and the Dawn though!
