Top Ten Tuesday: Character Freebie

Top Ten Tuesday: Character Freebie

Hmm, what kind of freebie do I want to do? As long as it deals with the character of a story, it’s game. But what to choose?

I figured it out! I’ll do the Top Ten characters that I see as role models! I think that’s a good one, don’t you? Or more like the top ten characters that I wish I could be like. Whichever sounds better.

Hermione Granger

The Harry Potter Series

I remember reading about her and watching Emma Watson portray her character as I grew up and I just knew that I was Hermione. I wanted to be just like her. She was so smart, so capable, and she never played dumb for the sake of a man. I just could not get enough of her and I wish that I could be more like her. She was always my biggest role model.

Rose Hathaway

Vampire Academy

If you’ve read The Vampire Academy series, I think you would find Rose Hathaway to be one of the most bad ass women in YA history. Well, I know I think so. I wish I was as strong as her, as capable. She had a year off of training because she was protecting Vasilisa, and yet she was still able to catch up with the help of Dmitri and her own tenacity. She’s brave, fiercely loyal, and I’d follow her into battle.

Vasilisa Petrovna

The Bear and the Nightingale

I just finished The Bear and the Nightingale and oh my gosh, I loved Vasya. She honestly took so much abuse from the villagers, sometimes her own father and sometimes Father Konstantin and yet she never faltered in her beliefs. She was never considered beautiful – constantly being called “Little Frog” and described as having the face of a frog – and she didn’t let that define her. She was more than just her lack of beauty, and I just admired that so much about her.

Starr Carter

The Hate U Give

My review for The Hate U Give always brings me back to the raw emotions that I felt listening to this novel. I was so proud of Starr for growing so much in the novel, and there’s a part of her that I wish I could have as my own. She’s so aware of her blackness, and I know that’s something that I always try to hide about myself because of all the negative images that are associated with being black, and yet as the novel went one she stopped being afraid of being black. She was proud of it. I wish I could be like that.

Fei

Soundless

Yet another female protagonist from Richelle Mead that I ended up falling in love with. I’m actually super disappointed that I never wrote a review for this one back in the day, because I really loved Fei. She may have gone along with everything in the beginning, but once she was able to hear for the first time, she went to figure out what the heck was going on with her village and help save them from dying.

June Woo

The Joy Luck Club

The Joy Luck Club has a special place in my heart, both the movie and the novel that it was based on. Amy Tan did an amazing job showing the relationships between mothers and daughters, between Chinese born and American born, and how the culture can disappear from one country to the other if one is not careful. June had to deal with the loss of her mother Suyuan, while also finding out that her mother’s first children were actually alive and back in China where she left them. I relate to June because she thought that she didn’t know her mother as well as she thought she did, and had to really understand what her mother was trying to teach her all those years ago before she died. I hope to make my mom proud of me the way Suyuan was of June.

Odessa of Grenwyr

Reign of the Fallen

I mean… Odessa is a bad ass necromancer okay? And when she had to deal with the grief of losing Evander, she just felt more human to me than ever. She was just such a well written, thought out character and I wish I had her strength. I guess the common theme for me is wanting more strength in my life, and getting it from all of these different characters in books.

Rachel Chu

Crazy Rich Asians

Do you know how crappy it is to feel inadequate over something that you couldn’t help? While Rachel felt like crap because Nick’s mom basically told her that since she didn’t come from a wealthy family, she wasn’t good enough for her son, I’ve felt like that for many, many reasons. But the way that Rachel stood her ground against everyone that felt like she was beneath them showed such confidence and strength in herself as her own person that I just… wow. I wish I had that.

Tessa McCaide

Alpha Girl Series

To be two different kinds of supernatural creatures put together is no small feat. Yeah sure, there have been hybrids on other shows as well, but not like Tessa. To be a witch and a werewolf in a world where already being a bruja is considered a bad thing is something that I’m so proud of Tessa for overcoming. Then to become an Alpha? What a bad ass chick. I would love to be like Tessa in almost all aspects.

Heaven Kogo

Samurai Girl

I really wish the TV series wasn’t terrible. Like how can you do Jamie Chung like that, man? But anyway, I grew up reading this series and although there were times when Heaven Kogo would piss me off to no end, she did end up becoming someone that could defend herself, and I’ve always wanted to be someone like that. I may not have the physical capabilities or dexterity to become a warrior like her – trust me, I am not athletic by any means – but books like this make me wish I could get off my butt and exercise enough to become one.

I felt like I was getting emotional at some of these, man! Not gonna lie, thinking back to only 10 characters that I wish I could be like was pretty hard, but I did it! What was your freebie? Have you read some or all of these novels? Which one of these was your favorite? Let me know!

Until next time.

  1. I haven’t seen anyone do this topic for this week’s prompt. Great choice and list, Leelynn! I just finished the Bear & the Nightingale and omg, I loved Vasya so much! Also, loving all the Jamie Chung in this post 😂

    1. Thanks for linking me to yours! I’m going to visit right now.

I was a little stuck on what topic to choose, but I’m glad I went with it. I felt like I was surrounding myself with the women in my literary life that I wanted to be like, and I just ended up feeling better about a lot of things. Haha yes Jamie Chung is life! I need to watch more things with her in it. I miss seeing her!

Ahhh did you post your review on the Bear & the Nightingale yet? I’d love to hear your thoughts!!

      1. I love Jamie Chung! And I LOVE that she’s married Bryan Greenberg! After watching and becoming obsessed with him in OTH all those years ago, I’ve been mad crushing. Haha I follow them both on IG and I love all their posts. I need to watch more with her in it too!

I haven’t posted my review on Bear & Nightingale yet. For some reason I’m really struggling to pull my thoughts together about it? Might make it a mini-review depending on if I manage to actually write anything! 😒

        1. I’m so glad she’s happy 🙂 I haven’t watched OTH honestly but as long as she married someone who makes her happy, that’s what I care about.

Whether it’s a mini review or full review, I’m sure I’m going to like it. I understand though. There are some books like that where I don’t know how to put my thoughts down on the blog, but I know what I’m feeling.

  2. This is an awesome topic! I love it. Hermione is the only one I’m familiar with…but now I have nine books I need to read. 😉 I think my hero might be Aelin Galathinius of Throne of Glass. Literally the inspiration for my hobbies and hair color. 🤣🤣

    1. Rachel was one of my favorite characters in that book and movie! I think watching the movie first will kind of ruin the book for you, but I definitely think you should give it a try! I read the book first and man, the prologue was way more racist than the movie portrays it, and I was so pissed off at how they were treated! But when they got their revenge, I was so happy lol.

  3. Rachel is a fantastic character… and all this talk about this character, and the OTP that is Nick and Rachel makes me realize I really must re-watch the movie! I *think* I read “Soundless,” but must admit: I don’t remember its characters…

Thanks so much for visiting Finding Wonderland last week.

    1. I ended up buying it because I could not get enough of the movie! I also have the trilogy on my shelf, although I need to read the last two books. I really only remember Fei from Soundless, and that’s because she was the main character and my favorite. It was a standalone, and I don’t think it got a lot of spotlight so I wouldn’t be surprised. I’m like that with a lot of books honestly! That’s why I’m glad when I find that I wrote a review and I can revisit my thoughts on it 🙂
