I don’t even know how to process this book right now, seriously. Like… are you freaking kidding me? I feel like I was avoiding this book because I didn’t know how to approach it. It didn’t seem like my cup of tea – which I’m realizing is actually expanding to include other types of books that I normally would have scoffed at solely because it’s not a fantasy type of world – and here I am realizing that I’m completely wrong?
First of all, definitely listen to the audiobook because the way the production is just blows me away. Since the POV switches between what Sadie is experiencing and then what West McCray puts on his podcast “The Girls”, you get to hear different nuances of interviewing these characters live and what goes into it. It just felt so real, like I could be listening to his show on Spotify or something. That’s how you know that the creators and producers of this audiobook did a damn good job.
I absolutely HATED how cruel people can be. Not just the whole murder of Sadie’s sister Mattie, but of how many people thought Sadie was stupid because of her damn stutter. Like, a stutter doesn’t make someone an idiot, and it doesn’t mean that they are drunk! It killed me hearing her try to get out her words, especially during the emotional times and when she confronted someone…
Basically people were mean as hell, but I guess it made sense since they didn’t know what Sadie’s real deal was – meaning why she was there in the first place. Why she went by her middle name Lyra (Lira? I listened to it so excuse me if I spelled it wrong), and why she was looking for “her father” and why she was so angry. But they probably felt really terrible when West McCray ended up showing up to talk to them afterwards.
This doesn’t have a “happy” ending. I don’t even feel like it has an ending honestly, because we are left wondering what happens to Sadie. You don’t know whether or not she survived, and I think that’s the hardest part to swallow. After everything she went through to avenge her sister’s death, does she even get to live after that? Would she even want to?
I’m upset now. Go listen to this book. Go read it. Go digest it somehow. Go get heartbroken like I freaking did. I don’t want to bear the heartache alone.

I think the book can be digested either way, but listening to the audiobook really made me feel like I was listening to an actual podcast and just made it feel like a real case. I read Sadie earlier this year, and loved every minute of it! I fully agree – the ending is really hard to digest, because I want Sadie TO BE HAPPY (and alive, duh), but I also thought that it was very fitting finish for this story. Great review!

I liked it! I wish I could do mini reviews honestly. I feel like if I spent time reading a book, I should spend time writing my thoughts. I think I have my moments also where my thoughts aren’t so coherent and I rely on gifs to take the place of words and feelings lol. Thanks for sharing!

It makes me so happy that you enjoyed it as much as I thought you would! I really wish that more audiobooks were done the way that this one was. I know it costs a lot more to hire so many voices, but it really did make the listening experience so captivating!

Sometimes it is hard to put into words how you feel. Every review is a struggle for me, but I always try to keep in mind my feelings about the book and make my words match that feeling. Every time is different! I definitely could tell how much you enjoyed the book from your review and that’s what really matters!
